Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau – The great singer died at the age of 86

With Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the music world loses one of the greatest opera singer of the century and an unprecedented artist of German art of song. The celebrated baritone died at the age of 86 years recently at his home on Lake Starnberg near Munich.

The Bavarian State Opera said by its Director Nicholas Bacher: “The singer have influenced decisively the art by his interpretation in the song and the Opera. The today song would be inconceivable without his style”. This lyrical art form from the romance, in which the singer in piano accompaniment posted themselves, he won a million audience. Thus he became such as a German Cultural Ambassador, in particular with Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” or the songs of Karl Löwe. As he presented above all complete cycles such as “Die Schöne Müllerin” or Gustav Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder”, he intiated a new creation of song evenings. However , he stood just as often also on the Opera stage – as Wolfram von Eschenbach in “Tannhäuser” or as “Papageno” in the Magic flute and played the Count Almaviva in “Figaro’s wedding” and the Otakar in “Der Freischütz”.

On 28 May 1925, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was born in Berlin as the son of classicists and a pianist. In his family, the talent of the son was very early supported by private singing lessons, so that he already had his first successful appearance at the Town Hall of Berlin-Zehlendorf, with the presentation of the “Winterreise” at the age of 17. During University studies, he jumped a 1947 without sample for a diseased soloist in the “German Requiem” by Brahms. Then, in autumn of the following year, he was hired as first lyric baritone at the States Opera in Berlin. Appearances all over Europe joined soon there, so he found international recognition for audience and music review.

In addition to his opera performances, Fischer-Dieskau soon put the focus on the interpretation of the song, in particular to Schubert’s works. His mostly accompanying pianist was the BtitonGerald Moore, with which he probably was the most important representative of the romantic song . But he remained not only on the German songs, and opened upalso the entire song treasures of Europe, especially those by Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Fauré in France or Tchaikovsky in Russia . But also as an opera singer he was not only limited to the traditional repertoire. Thus,e.g., Hans- Werner Henze wrote to him the leading role in the “Elegy for young lovers” .Other modern Opera titles were Gottfried von Einem’s “Danton’s death”, Busonis”Dr. Faustus” , Hindemiths “Mathis”and Berg’s “Wozzeck”. With the acquisition of the title role in Aribert Reimann’s Shakespeare Opera “Lear”, he managed the probably greatest performance of his work. Thus, the design of “King Lear” remains so far incomparable with the oversized suffering interpreted by him.

After more than 45 years of concert activity the singer retired in December 1992 from the stage. In addition to literary activities he devoted himself with special engagement still to the singer `s young generation .So just young singers could particularly benefit from him .with his song vocals, of the almost perfect connection, as also the penetration of words and sounds, will remain. With his song vocals, of the almost perfect connection, as also the penetration of words and sounds, Fischer-Dieskau will remain in the music world as an everlasting testament of mentally full musicality.
